Basic Tweet Types

January 4th, 2010 by holywebmaker No comments »

There are really only two basic types of Tweets. Replies (also called @mentions) or retweets.

@Mention or Replies

You can reply to someone’s Tweet simply by putting the @symbol in front of their name. For example, “@HolyWebMaker, your blog is awesome!” This makes the tweet appears in their reply page instead of in the general Tweetstream. This is a great way to start conversations with people and establish relationships. Simply comment on one of their tweets or mention something you read on their blog. Many of the Twitter client applications make this simple. » Read more: Basic Tweet Types

Start Tweeting – Do it NOW!

January 3rd, 2010 by holywebmaker No comments »

Start publishing some tweets. Twitter asks What’s Happening – simply answer the question on a regular basis. Many people don’t care about what you are doing until you have established a relationship with them.

Here are some good ways to get started:

  • Follow some blogs that you are interested and post links to the interesting posts. You can follow blogs using an RSS feed with a feed reader such as Google Reader. You can actually connect your Google reader to your Twitter account to make this easier. We will cover this later. For now, just tweet something like: “Interesting post on ______. Have you read it? http://example.com/some-great-story”. Make sure you include http:// in the link and not just www so the link is click-able in the Tweetstream. If it’s a long link, there are tools to make the links shorter. We will cover this in future articles too.
  • Tweeting quotes is good too. Do a search for some quotes of interest and tweet them. Personal development quotes and quotes by famous people are always popular. I personally like to quote the bible, but that can irritate some people.

Here are some bad ways to get started:

  • Start posting sales tweet after sales tweet. You can add some sales in later, but this is not the way to start.
  • Politics and Religion are HOT topics. If you can engage like a grown up and shake off a few bad tweeters avoid this area. I personally enjoy it as it sparks great conversation. Just be nice and remember that there is usually a person on the other end that you are communicating with.
  • Direct message everyone that follows you. I personally don’t even look at my direct messages on a regular basis. Too many spam messages there. If you can’t say it publicly, then why say it.

Have fun and get a few good tweets under your belt. Do this daily for just a minute or two each day. You’ll start to attract others with consistent tweets.

Set up Your Twitter Account

January 2nd, 2010 by holywebmaker 2 comments »

Setting up Twitter your own account is easy. Here are a few things that you should consider when organizing your account. This is important if you already have an existing account too. Consider these tips and it can improve your entire Twitter experience.

Create an Account:

Go to Twitter and Sign Up. The process is very simple and I won’t bore you with details. Take some time to think of a good username and experiment. As you enter usernames it will immediately let you know if it is available or not. Once you find the perfect name that is available move on with the registration. Generally, the first account you register should be your name if you can get it. Even if you don’t plan to use your name, get it if it is available. You may change your mind later. If you are registering a business name you should get a second account for the business. Some of the following registration screens will ask you to add friends from your contact list or to follow some popular accounts. I generally skip those screens since you can return to them later. I prefer to find my own friends on Twitter.

When you click Finish, you will then be taken to your very own Twitter account. You are logged in and ready to go!

Update Your Settings:

The settings are very important on Twitter. If your account is not completely filled out, many people will not follow you back. Take a few minutes to fill out all of the information on the Account page. Be sure to fill in your More Info URL and the One Line BIO.  People will use the information you enter here to determine if you are worth following. It also helps locate you in searches on Twitter and through various third party applications. Don’t simply enter a bunch of keywords as they appear totally uninteresting to people, although they may get you found. Simply describe yourself in 160 characters. Look around at other members for examples. I never protect updates. I figure, I am on Twitter to be found and meet people. Many people won’t bother following you if you protect updates.

Save your settings and explore some of the other account settings pages.

Look at Devices and enter your mobile phone number here if you want Twitter updates to your phone. I generally do not do this as you will get overwhelmed as the number of friends increase.

Scan the Notices to determine how notification emails are sent. I usually opt out of all the emails because I use other tools to monitor my twitter activity. We will talk about the many tools later.

The Picture page is really important. When you open this page you will see the small avatar on the screen which is the default for Twitter. If you want new followers, putting a photo of yourself here is important. If you are running the Twitter account for your company or business, then your logo is a great choice. The key here is to change the defaults. Put something so you can be identified in the Tweetstream by your followers. The graphic may be more important than your name when people are scanning Tweets. A good image will make you stand out.

The Design page is almost as important as the Picture page.  Here you can change the background of your Twitter page from the default. Twitter provides a number of alternatives that you can select or you can upload your own background. You can also change all the colors if you wish. Again, whatever you do, just change it so you are not running the default. It shows you have taken some time setting up your account. With all the great Twitter applications, many people don’t even look at your web page anymore. However, it is part of your presence on Twitter and is worth taking the little effort necessary to change it. Later on I will show you where you can get or create a professional background that will set you apart.

That is it for the simple setup. Now, send your first tweet. Tweet something like, “I just joined Twitter and I am looking forward to meeting people interested in _______”. Fill in the blank with one or two of your favorite things (it will get you on the radar of like-minded users.  Just type it in and click the Update button.

An Introduction to Twitter

January 1st, 2010 by holywebmaker No comments »

Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that allows you answer the question, “What’s Happening?” by sending short text messages 140 characters in length, called “tweets”, to your friends, or “followers.” Twitter is one of the fastest growing sites on the web today. It is taking the internet by storm and there are thousands of new users joining each day.

Twitter is best described as a micro blogging platform. You are limited to 140 characters each time you make an update, which initially, may seem a small amount. However, as you become more experienced, you will be amazed at what you can fit into 140 characters.

That said, Twitter is much, much more than that. It is like one huge global chat room, but then again, it doesn’t have to be. It all depends on how many people you follow on Twitter. If it’s in the thousands, then your “Tweetstream” will be running fast and furious with everything that’s coming in. If you are only following a few hundred, or even less, then things are much easier to keep up with.

Twitter is also a great way to meet new people online, particularly those with similar interests to you. I will show you how to do this more as we progress through this twitter introduction.

OpenNetworker Update

December 31st, 2009 by holywebmaker No comments »

Add 999 Linked In Connections in less than 3 daysLess than 3 days ago I Checked out Open Networker to see how it helps grow networks. I quickly jumped my connections to 999 in less than 3 days and met quite a few great people. At first I was expecting to get a bunch of jumk and spam. But, I was surprised to find that I have had REAL conversations with dozens of people already. Many of these great networkers sent a great introduction email and engaged in conversation. for example, I found two people involved in virtual assistant companies. I really need to get one of those! I found a couple cycling fanatics. Many of the others were great business development gurus or HR experts. The conversation was interesting and I am involved more in the disucssion boards as a result.

Bottom line: If you want to grow your network, get to know some of the world’s greatest networkers and engage in real conversations…Check out Open Networker!

As far as adding twitter followers goes I added just under 200 new followers. That is not a bad number, but he jury is still out since I was able to do that same with SocialOomph. Yes, I’ve added a few, but it does not compare to the growth on LinkedIn.

What is Twitter Really For?

December 30th, 2009 by holywebmaker No comments »

My favorite use of twitter is to monitor keywords. For example, I watch for the word “composting” to join in composting conversations. People ask questions and I get a chance to answer them. That is a great way to engage in the conversation. The followers will come as you progress and they will be quality followers. One key is to talk about what you are interested in — watch and engage in the conversation around those topics.

Oh, and I don’t do twitter all day. In a normal day, I’ll check it 2-4 times. This usually takes A LOT less than 10 minutes each time and I have multiple twitter accounts that are active:

  1. I logon with Seesmic, Seesmic is a great tool to watch multiple streams for multiple accounts.
  2. Check for @mentions and respond.
  3. Then I look at 3-5 streams of keywords and only glance through the last 100-200 tweets for each keyword.
  4. If something catches my interest I’ll join the conversation.

For advertising (or promoting), I tried an experiment on Black Friday. I tweeted specials for most of the day with affiliate links. This was from an account that was clearly intended for this purpose. I didn’t offend anyone and actually made about 70 dollars that day. I may make more of an effort next year on the big sales days and plan for them instead of winging it like this year.

Bottom line, it is for networking…it is for advertising…it is for seeing what people are saying about your products or business. It is basically what you make it to be.

Micro Continuity in a Nutshell

November 9th, 2009 by holywebmaker No comments »

Micro Continuity is not just internet marketing. It is a business model that will take your product sales to a whole new level. If you have information to share with others then you need to get a grasp of the Micro Continuity concept. It will change the way you think….and definitely change the way your market your products.

What is Micro Continuity? We’ll you could hear about Mirco Continuity directly from Russell Brunson or you can read my simple explanation.

Simply put, it is a business model that gives away great products for free and includes a trial membership for something even better. Micro Continuity packs several proven business models into a series that maximizes your selling opportunities, builds relationships with customers, and increases your overall income. Russell’s training breaks it down into manageable pieces and walks you through every step. He even offers help (quality coaching) along the way to get your business up and running in as little as a weekend.

  • Learn to create a simple ad with a great hook.
  • Quickly create a suite of products to address multiple price points and customer interests.
  • Build relationships with the right people and launch your product like the pros.

Membership sites are great sources of income. The hard part is creating new content to keep customers around. Micro Continuity leverages the short-term or fixed-term membership model. Your training program is set for a fixed number of weeks.  This sets a goal in the mind of your customers and allows you to create a quality product without adding new content each month.

Micro Continuity incorporates one-time offiers. One time offers are great ways to make additional sales. But they are hard to offer if you don’t generate that initial interest. Micro Continuity will generate more opportunities to offer great deals to your customers.

Here is a super-simple example. Imagine a great online course that costs 500 dollars. The complete package is sold to your customer and you collect all the money up front. Not a bad deal – right? The problem is that fewer people may pay that amount of money up front. A Micro Continuity package would offer the course in smaller increments and deliver bits of it weekly or monthly. The customer may take 10 months to complete the course for 50 dollars a month. In the end, you make the same amount of money. Actually, you will likely make more money. You’ll make more money because the customer is interacting with you on a regular basis and you will have 10 or more months to offer additional products and services. If you product is truly a great quality product then you are interacting with a happy customer that respects you. Your customer will listen to what you say and will take the time to consider your offers.

What? You don’t have any great products to sell? The Micro Continuity Course will prove to you that YOU do have great products ready to create. Russell will demonstrate how simple it is to get your information product created.

As you can imagine I am barely scratching the surface. You really need to get the free mp3 player!

SocialOomph – Twitter Time Saver

November 6th, 2009 by holywebmaker No comments »

Improve Your Productivity On Twitter! The more time I spend using Twitter the more I realize that I could easily use it all day long. Fortunately, a few months ago I started using SocialOomph to manage multiple twitter accounts. This time saving tool has helped me manage followers. Managing twitter followers takes less than 5 minutes to review and respond to more than 200 new followers every day across multiple accounts. But there is so much more that SocialOomph can do!

I have drafted several frequent tweets that I  schedule and modify as I see fit. This allows me to tweet while I work at my regular day job. Why would you schedule a tweet when the motto of twitter is What are you doing right now? Well, if I know I am doing something in a few hours I can plan accordingly. For example, I might arrive at a hiking trail and tweet while I am hiking. I know it is simplistic, but you can take it to the next level in business. If you are launching a product you can schedule regular updates, set a daily countdown, and announce when you are launched. This simple automation allows you to focus on the product and the launch while keeping your followers engaged. And after you launch you can quickly review the @mentions, DMs, and other keywords.

I know there is much more that SocialOomph and Twitter can do to help my business and my fun life. I am going to scratch a little past the surface soon!
